DSTV Now on Amazon Fire TV Stick



Hopefully this tutorial will help others in South Africa get DSTV now running on a Fire TV Stick.
The latest version of DSTV Now requires a newer version of Google Play Services to work.  Im not 100% sure whether this too requires the Google Playstore to operate, but Ive included links to a newer version of this as well.

There are a number of ways of installing apk files on the fire sticks.  Ive found the simplest is by using the adb options built into the fire stick tv.  Another simple way is to get the downloader app
installed on your device and install the packages one by one.  In order to get the system ready for adb following the tutorial supplied by amazon here.  Once ready download the adblink software from here   There are clients for windows mac and inux.

    Went through all the steps and finally the app starts and says Ito sign in I need to enter a code. Problem is this screen only lasts 5seconds and then app shuts down. Any solution?

      @FelixWendo - my DSTV app is also starting up and the screen only lasts 5 seconds and then the app shuts down. Did you find any solutions?

    Went through the steps and it worked for the first day. But then the next day I received this error when I tried to play a channel "Video Playback unavailable - Please ensure that you are using a Google-certified device by going to Google Play Store Menu -> Settings -> Device Certification".

    or does one also have to get the system ready for adb. I am a layman, and have no cooking clue about abd and connecting to firetv through adb. I am hoping I do not have to do anything here. other wise Im lost in the water.

    This doesn’t work, it says Google Play not compatible with device. I followed all the steps using the versions as suggested. I’m using the new 4K FIRESTICK.
    I suggest you buy the Xiomi Mi Box, works like a charm.

    Hi all. This does work on a fire stick, but don't do this on a fire stick 4k, all works fine, until you reboot, then it goes into a boot loop and you cant get out of it. Had to send my stick back for a exchange from amazon.

    I managed to brick my 4k firestick by installing Google services, only to find out that dstv runs on most smart tv's now. Took me 2 minutes to install on my Samsung TV and works like a charm. I'm yet to try on my LG but so far so good. Hope this helps someone out there. (btw anyone who gets stuck in a startup loop on firestick, just leave your the device in the loop for 4-8 hours and it will eventually take you back into the menu where you can uninstall Google services)

Zabbix - adding apt update checks

Theres a number of articles on the internet on adding checks to package updates for Zabbix and Nagios.  I found the simplest way of doing this on Ubuntu is to use the update-notifier app-check application.   If you run /usr/lib/update-notifier/apt-check it will output the number of packages requiring updates as well as the number of security updates requiring updates.
